The third country on our backpacking adventure! We skipped the mainland and spent all our time in the beautiful Bay Island Utila.

A short ferry ride from La Ceiba, Utila is known for being a cheap place to learn how to Scuba Dive! (Tequila Tuesdays are also legendary)

Although Utila is very small (about 13km long and 5km wide), there are over a dozen dive schools. We'd researched a little bit beforehand, but decided on arrival to go with Parrots! 

Utila is one of the cheapest places in the world to learn how to dive - our PADI Open Water Certification cost us $260 / ~£200 - which included 2 fun dives at the end and our accommodation!

It took is 5 days total to complete our certification.

Day 1: we got to explore the island, do some snorkelling, attempt to tan (emphasis on attempt), and get introduced to PADI.

Day 2 and 3: more theory, learning about the equipment and some confine dives!

Day 4: our first Open Water dives in the reef - down to 12m! My ears took a while to adjust to the pressure, but once they did ohmygod it was amazing!

Day 5: last two dives, up to 18m - then our two fun dives in the afternoon! No more skills to learn, just beautiful fish and coral to see.

We would have loved to stay longer and do our Advanced, but Guatemala was calling! Diving was so amazing - and I can't wait to do it again!

If you ever get the chance to go to Utila - take it! Our PADI instructor Joel loved it so much when he first visited that he just stayed - for 4 years!

Guatemala There's far too much to say in one blog, but this beautiful country is definitely not one to miss. 💰  Quetzal  (£1 = Q10 / $1 = Q7.3) Adventuring Acatenango in Antigua Fuego Volcano erupting Antigua ( the city, not the Caribbean island Dad) is a beautiful colonial town with colourful buildings, great markets,  terrible nachos , and the famous Acatenango volcano hike . People will tell you this is the hardest thing they've ever done in their life, and yes, it was hard, but if I can manage it anyone can.  Struggling up the 3600+m / 12000+feet of ashy volcano was so so worth it when we made it to camp and got to watch a thunderstorm and erupting Feugo Volcano from up in the clouds, singing  Fernando by ABBA round the bonfire with our ball-of-energy guide Fernando. 🏡 - Tropicana Hostel View of Fuego from Acatenango San Pedro Piercings in Lake Atitlan Lake Atitlan Beautiful lake surrounded ...

Better Belize It

Our Belize travel route Belize The second last country on our backpacking adventure, Belize is small but very beautiful.  💰 Belizean Dollar (£1 = BZ$2.6 / $1 = BZ$2) ATM Caves  Sadly not full of money, the Actun Tunichil Muknal Caves are meant to be incredible and well worth a visit. Belize City It's generally worth avoiding the capital cities in Central America - they're either not particularly safe, or just not as interesting as the rest of the country. Belize City is, however, where you get the water taxi to...: Caye Caulker Caye Caulker is a great wee island, that somehow has a China Town, despite only being about 5 miles long / 1 mile wide. We stayed at 🏡Dirty McNasty's, which has fab free breakfast and rum punch, but don't stay here unless you are guaranteed one of their newer rooms - their older rooms are just dirty and nasty.  - 🏡 Bella's across the road is better.
